About Us

We are a duly registered and recognized student organization based in the University of the Philippines, Diliman that focuses on the love for literature. We also firmly believe in our motto, "In libris libertas," meaning, "in books there is freedom."

Our organization is composed of undergraduate and graduate students, allumni, and faculty of the UP Diliman.

This organization was formed because a few friends loved to read books and wanted a system wherein they could borrow them, trade them, and collect them. This system worked well enough for them, but they knew that a lot of other people loved reading as well, and had the same difficulties: lack of funding (books are expensive, you know!), lack of other resources (ever wanted a book so much but you couldn’t find it? You might learn that someone here actually owns it!) and a lack of a community with which to share this love.

We remain true to these roots. At the moment, for instance, the organization has compiled an inventory of more than 3,000 books, from members who are all willing to share them. But as the organization grows, and grows older, it has evolved and developed.

Companionship and mutual interest are all noble causes for forming organizations. But the members of this org found that they wanted to share their appreciation for literature (in all forms, of all kinds, and all genres) to other people, whether within or outside the UP community.

Thus we hold our book sharing sessions and film showings. We go on field trips to bargain bookshops. We hold a yearly film screening in order to fund a scholarship program and other community service activities such as donations and book drives. And we spend time with each other, just reading or talking about books, and, of course, everything else under the sun.

Ex Libris UP dreams of becoming a network of organizations geared towards spreading the appreciation of literature and the development of literacy in the country.
